Supportive Family

Brad and his wife, Marilyn, met at Rice University and have been married for 34 years. Marilyn serves as associate director of Inprint, Inc. a nonprofit organization that champions writing and writers and supports the Creative Writing Graduate Program at the University of Houston. They have raised two very independent-minded sons. Expert rock climber, Calvin, 28, is an instructor with North Carolina Outward Bound program. Christopher, 25, is a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin studying mechanical engineering after serving five years in the U.S. Marine Corp as an Arabic linguist.

In his time away from the office, Brad enjoys reading, traveling with his family, mostly in Mexico and Central America and attending local civic events. He can often be found on weekends running at Rice University or Hermann Park or practicing meditation. “Meditation is one of the ways I maintain balance in stressful times. It has also confirmed my sense that the job of being a judge is one that requires the practice compassionate kindness,” says Brad, who helped establish the Margaret Austin Center, a non-profit spiritual retreat center near Chappell Hill.
